Question:
Just wondering what people's experience is with Trazodone, especially at
bedtime to combat insomnia.
Answer:
i dunno if this will work, but, i think a number of people here have used
trazodone. it works for some people, and for some (like me) doesn't. but
i think it's worth a shot because at least i don't recall any side
effects at all. so there really isn't a downside. there's just a chance
it won't work. and if not, well then you can try something else i guess.
plus it's an antidepressant i think - an older one- so it could help your
mood too. okay, well that's about all i can offer you about it, but like
i said I have tried it and even though it didn't help me sleep, i know a
bunch of poeple here have said it has helped them and i don't really
think there's much risk or much downside.
I was prescribed Trazodone approximately 18 months ago for Post Partum
Depression. A symptom I was having was not being able to sleep because I was
terrified of something happening to my child when I did. Trazodone helped me a
great deal. For the first few days, I had panic attacks trying to take them
because I was afraid of sleeping, but I took them anyway, and it was really
helpful. I only took them for about 3 months. But as time went on, I wouldn't
have to take them every night to sleep, maybe just once or twice a week. And
after a while I was sleeping on my own. I would recommend it for insomnia. I
didn't recognize any symptoms of addictive behavior or NOT being able to sleep
without it after a while.
I think it is worth a try. I know it worked for me. I was having
trouble sleeping. I would wake up at 2 in the morning and not fall
back asleep until about 4. This happened night after night. The
doctor prescribed 25 mg of Trazodone before bed. The first night I
took it about a half hour before bedtime. I fell asleep 5 minutes
after that while I was reading and it was a good book too. :) I have
learned to take it moments before I get into bed because it really
makes me so sleepy within minutes. Sometimes I still wake up in the
night but I fall right back asleep now.
I just started taking a 50 mg dose of Trazodone at bedtime for
insomnia brought on by Paxil and Clonidine. I've since stopped taking
the Clonidine. Trazodone gives me 3 to 4 hours of sleep, but then I
wake up and need .5 mg of Xanx to get back to sleep. I'm going to ask
my Doctor about upping the dose to 75 or 100 mg to see if I can
eliminate having to take the Xanax at night altogether. No side
effects whatsoever plus the dose I'm taking is quite low compared to a
normal daily dose. I don't recall which web site I read this on
(maybe Medscape), but there has been some research re. using Trazodone
as just a sleeping aid; results were some improvement at 50 mg and
considerable improvement in sleeping at 100 mg.
