Answer:
It's called "sleep apnea."

It's time to go see a doctor that specializes in sleep disorders.

There are a number of things that can be done, some simple and some somewhat involved.

Gila Lindsley, Ph.D refers to the sleep cycle and the body temp. in her article "Light, Depression, & Melatonin" at http://world.std.com/~halberst/contrib/sad.html There are also links on sleep apnea and snoring, though I haven't looked at them yet.

my husband has sleep apnea.... i lie awake listening if he stops breathing for a long period i give him a sharp elbow in the ribs and he wakes up, annoyed, and then complains he can't get back to sleep so, should i leave him be? keeps me awake worrying (and not just about his insurance policy)

You have a right to be worried. People with sleep apnea are at a higher risk of heart disease, or so the statistics say.

Have you tried taping him? Audio tape, that is!! Not duct tape!! :-D

Perhaps that will prove to him that this is something that should be addressed.

I'm not saying that he is DEFINITELY at risk, just that the stats show that it's something to look into.

My dad suffered from Sleep Apnea and for years he was totally misdiagnosed by many doctors. He would fall asleep anywhere. He seemed to be on edge a lot because of his lack of rest. Finally we found the right doctor. His name is DR. WILFRED CORSON, he heads up the Sleep Apnea clinic here in Minneapolis with his partner Dr. Ralph Steele. His phone # is (612)863-3750, the address is : 920 East 28th Street, Minnepolis, MN I don't know where you live, but if you call or write them, they could direct you to someone or find you some help. He saved my dad's life and I know he can do something for you as well. Let me know what you find out!
