Melatonin & Insomnia ?

Question:
I have been reading this NG for a few months now and have never seen Melatonin mentioned.

Answer:
I am a person that is against drugs unless they are absolutely necessary. I began having bouts of insomnia and was told by a friend about Melatonin. Knowing my nature, I was against it, but after the insomnia got worse, I began taking it. I went into it with the attitude that once I got a good nights sleep that I would stop taking it. It only took a couple of days and believe it or not, I was sleeping again.

One thing that I have learned through extensive reading of literature, is that your bed is to be used for two things. 1) Sleep and 2) ... well you know (SEX). You should not watch TV in your bed, you should not eat in your bed, etc. You only do in your bed what your bed was meant to be used for. If you use it for other things, then you are programming yourself that when you go to bed for example, you are there to read a book or watch TV, thereby compromising your sleep.

I did not study Melatonin to see if there were any side effects, but there were none for me. I did not wake up in the morning like a zombie as some meds do.

I took melatonin during a stressful time about two years ago. This was pre ad, but I did not really notice a big difference. A friend of mine gave them to me and swore by them, so it is definitely one of those YMMV things. I think Tim just posted something on a time release version of melatonin, and he seems very happy with it. It makes me think that maybe I am just a little too high strung for the melatonin to help.

I tried the reg. melatonin and it didn't have any effect on me. With the melatonex when I awoke I could tell it was a deep heavy sleep. YMMV
