I need some information about Sleep Apnea ?

Question:
How much does it cost to get a sleep test done.

Answer:
When you have to pay from your own pocket then you could consider to buy an APAP plus software. Then you are spending your money not only for the study but also for the treatment. See my pages at http://home.wanadoo.nl/w.h.vogelaar/marfan/apnea/ The ResMed graphs show the state of your apnea.

Depends on what country you live in and *exactly* what kind of 'sleep test' you want to have.

There is only one complete sleep study that is used universally. It is called a polysomnogram (PSG). It is done in a specially instrumented sleep lab. You can learn about a PSG determines by searching the web for polysomnograph, polysomnogram, PSG.

It's a little difficult to say how much they cost, because in NHS countries, they don't cost anything, except in taxes.

In the US it is difficult to say because they are mostly covered by insurance and the billing is misleading. My best guess at the moment is from $1000-$3000 in the US. However, the cost can be negotiated, if you don't have insurance. The best place to start on such a negotiation would be at what a sleep lab is willing to accept in payment from an insurance company.

There are numerous other, less complete, 'sleep tests', many of shich can be/are done in the home. You can also learn about these by searching the web.

The simplest 'sleep test' is accomplished by using a recording finger oximeter a couple of nights, at home, This will measure your blood oxygen saturation level while you 'sleep'. Reduced levels can be an indicator of apnea, UARS, and maybe other of the 40 some sleep disorders. But you still won't know with any kind of certainty what your sleep disorder is or how to treat it.

My sleep test involved something like an APAP. Was given a machine to take home that measured not just oxygen saturation but also effort to breathe and other stuff. Dunno what exactly but there were about half a dozen bits taped to me while I slept.

As you say, it was in the US and the cost is a mystery. But prolly cheaper than a sleep lab.
