Question:
Sound Medicine, Inc. is sponsoring a pilot research project on a novel
insomnia treatment. This is a preliminary study to gauge effectiveness of a
combined treatment program. Full details, informed consent, disclaimers, and
an application for potential volunteers are accessible at the following URL:
http://www.soundmedicine.com/sleepstudyapplication.html
The volunteers will be provided with a FREE "Natural Sleep System" with the
agreement to provide answers to a pre-treatment and post-treatment
questionnaire. The components of the "Natural Sleep System" are:
1) Sleep Hygiene Educational Materials
2) An herbal/vitamin formulation
3) An Audio CD using Binaural Beat Audio Signals, Full Spectrum Noise (a
rain shower in the Everglades), and a Guided Relaxation.
Each of these components have been clinically studied and shown effective in
the treatment of various forms of insomnia. The efficacy of the combination
has NOT been demonstrated.
Answer:
This sounds good enough to make me wish I was living in Virginia.
Almost.
What's a "Guided Relaxation"? Is it to be learned as in autosuggestion?
or...
I'd also like to know what your pick was/is for an "herbal/vitamin"
combination.
It sounds quite interesting and appealing.
The Natural Sleep System :
This product is an innovative NATURAL treatment
for insomnia. It is comprised of three components.
The first is an audio CD called "Natural Sleep".
This audio program combines cutting edge audio
engineering to naturally induce a change in the
brain waves of the listener that are identical to
those of a sleeping person. (Please see Scientific
References section). The method combines various
frequency "binaural beats" with a guided
relaxation, all accompanied to the sounds of a
light rain shower in the Florida Everglades.
The second component is a bottle of blended
natural herbal and nutritional supplements called
KavaKalm. The main ingredient is an herbal product
called KAVA KAVA. This herb, which is
NON-SEDATING, has been used for centuries as a
gentle emotional relaxant. There is excellent
scientific evidence supporting the use of KAVA
KAVA as a non-sedating treatment for anxiety and
insomnia.
The third component is a sleep hygiene educational
package insert. These sleep hygiene
recommendations have been compiled from the
medical literature and represent the simplest
derivation of sleep research and clinical
experience from across the nation.
A guided relaxation or meditation does not, or should not, include
subliminals. It is just a soothing voice that "guides" you into reaching
the images. For instance:
Take a full breath and release it slowly. Before you there is a door. Look
closely at the door; examine the surface, is it wood, is it painted? Is
there elaborate hardware? In your pocket you find a key that fits the
door's lock. You unlock the door and walk through, closing and locking it
again behind you. Knowing that the door is locked reassures you that you
are secure. Nothing can come into this place unless you let it in.
And so forth. I GREATLY enjoy guided meditations. I've also conducted
them. I find that it is easier to reach a relaxed state under guide
because it gives my busy mind something to focus on outside of itself.
I've also found that once I've reached that state of deep relaxation, I
don't necessarily follow the guide, but "go off" on my own.
There are lots of guided meditation tapes available, many focusing on
specific things like insomnia. You could no doubt put together your own
"sleep system" of relaxation herbs, guided meditation tapes and sleep
hygiene information is easy to find.
